Techniques Our Fuquay-Varina Pediatric Dentists Use to Set Kids at Ease

Did you know that pediatric dentists spend more time in school than general dentists? It’s true! After graduating from dental school, pediatric dentists spend an additional 2 or 3 years learning to take care of children—a category that includes infants, toddlers, and young adults. During these years, we focus not only on the unique oral care needs of children, but child development and child psychology techniques that can help set kids at ease. Below are a few of the techniques our Fuquay-Varina children’s dentists use to help kids have a positive, calm experience.

The Tell, Show, Do Method

Children (and adults!) tend to be less anxious when they know what to expect. We use the “Tell, Show, Do” method to help children understand exactly what will occur during a procedure, and what sensations they will feel. First, we describe the procedure using simple words the child can understand. Specifically, we describe what noises he might hear, what type of vibrations he might feel, or what he might taste. Then, we demonstrate what the procedure will look like, sometimes on a doll or stuffed animal, and sometimes on a person. Finally, we ask for the child’s permission to proceed. Usually, this method gives anxious children a better sense of control and predictability over the experience.

Positive Reinforcement

Pediatric dentists are trained to provide extra positive reinforcement for behaviors that adults typically do without thinking, such as climbing in the dentist’s chair without fuss. We offer plenty of encouragement and praise throughout the procedure to reward positive behavior and discourage negative behavior. For children who are especially anxious, it is often helpful to give out small, tangible rewards at every stage of the treatment, such as stickers or “tokens” like plastic coins. At the end of the treatment, the rewards can be “cashed in” for a bigger treat. This technique is usually only successful with children older than 5, as younger kids have difficulty understanding delayed gratification.

Distraction

Pediatric dentists use many distraction techniques to engage children and draw attention away from the procedure. We might tell stories; engage the child in conversation; or in some cases, allow the child to play with a toy he found interesting in the waiting room.

Another distraction technique we use is that of visualization. To give an example, we might ask the patient to visualize a pleasant experience he or she has had recently, such as a birthday party or trip to the beach. We will prompt the child to describe different feelings and details, to help them feel that they are re-experiencing the event.

Attention distraction, which involves putting the child’s mind to work, can also be a useful strategy. The dentist might challenge the child to count the number of tiles on the ceiling; answer trivia questions, like the capitals of states; or do their times tables—anything that will help shift their focus away from the dental procedure.

Finally, television, movies, and video games are terrific distraction tools, and pediatric dentists usually have a wide selection available!
