What is pulp therapy

Pulp is oral tissue composed of vascular tissue, soft connective tissue, lymphatic and nervous tissue. Pulp therapy is needed when the pulp in the teeth gets infected either through tooth decay or injury that led to pulp inflammation and exposure. This procedure is also referred to as root canal for kids. It can easily be done by our local pediatric dentists at children’s dentist in Fuquay NC.

The procedure can be divided into two:

1. Pulpotomy – it is done when only a small portion of the pulp is infected while the pulp root remains healthy. The infected pulp area is then isolated, removed and treated with medication that helps soothe the pulp and prevent further infection of the area. A crown is then placed over the tooth to provide even more strength.

2. Pulpectomy – it is done when severe tooth decay or infection affects the entire tooth pulp. In some cases the root canals are also affected. In this case the local pediatric dentist must remove the pulp, cleanse the root canals with medication to prevent further infection. This can also be described as a root canal for kids.

Signs of infection

  • Constant pain in the affected area
  • Sensitivity to foodstuff that are either hot or cold
  • Redness and swelling
  • Looseness of the tooth
